Earlier this year, Troubled Coast released a killer of an EP. I've seen them compared (many times over) to La Dispute. A band I wish I could get into, but for some reason I just can't. However, I love everything about I've Been Thinking About Leaving You. Perhaps it's the fact that through all the speak-yelling from Mike Scornaienchi, there's still some really great choruses. This makes the album a bit more accessible. Seriously, I love a good chorus that melds with the speak-yelling. For example, in "La Jatee", there is some sweet back-and-forth between "clean-ish" vocals and yelling. And, all I can think is bring on the noise.
Often, this also helps give a slight reprieve to the absolutely intense lyrics spitting into your ear. The first track, "Patient Hands", includes one of the catchiest choruses of the year. This song has definitely earned a permanent spot on my sprint-interval running playlist. Every time the chorus (to which Matt Vincent from The American Scene adds vocals) comes on, I find myself running harder and harder.
This is a really good EP and I recommend everyone to check it out -- especially if the type of music may not be your usual thing. It's much more accessible than others like it. Also, be on the look out as Troubled Coast will be releasing a full-length later this year. As I said earlier…bring on the noise!
