Moving Mountains Release Final Telegraph Sessions Video for "Apsides"

Moving Mountains have released a video for "Apsides", which marks the last video of their Telegraph Sessions.  These videos are live previews of many of the songs on their new self-titled album that drops next Tuesday.  Have a listen to all videos from the sessions here!!

What Have I Been Listening To This Week?

This week I've been listening to some new music and some old.  Plus I made a new discovery.  I love it when that happens.

Crash Of Rhinos - Knots
This album totally swung in under the radar for me.  I only discovered Crash Of Rhinos through Absolutepunk.net's Absolute100 feature.  This album is absolutely fantastic.  I love how raw and honest it is.  Definitely among the best of the year.  Now, if they'd only get it up on US Spotify, I'd be even happier.

Align In Time - Me & My Arrow
Align In Time has finally gotten his album up on Spotify.  When I found out about this, I immediately started listening to it again.  This album is so fantastic.  I was immediately reminded why this was among my favorite albums of 2011.

Native - Orthodox
This album just keeps growing on me.  With every new listen, I love it more and more.  Such raw energy -- totally awesome.

Jody Wisternoff & James Grant - Anjunadeep 05
This is my go-to DJ mix at the moment.  Some really great beats on this one!

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks
NIN released a new album this week.  Of course, I'm listening to it.  And, it's good!

Reverse The Curse - Existent
This was another big grower. So groovy.

Listen to Knots here:

You can check the rest out in my Weekly Spotify playlist.  Follow it to see what I listen to each week!

Watch Moving Mountains Telegraph Sessions

Moving Mountains will be releasing their new self-titled album on September 10th.  But, if you're like me, you may be having trouble waiting for that day to arrive.  Well, they've been providing all of us with a nice treat, performing all of the songs on the album via their Telegraph Sessions, which you can watch below.  I'll keep posting new videos to this post as new ones arrive.  I've already listened several times, and the songs sound fantastic!  I can't wait to hear the actual album.

Enjoy!

Stream Reverse The Curse's New Album "Existent"

I stumbled upon Reverse The Curse over on Absolutepunk.net.  I found the music oddly strange (at least compared to my other tastes), but it's actually quite good.  I have a feeling I'll enjoy this even more with every new listen.  So,  I thought I'd throw 'em a shout out.  Their new album, Existent, arrives tomorrow.  So, have a listen, and if you like what you here, go and get the album!

Some Recommendations, Including O'Brother, Native and Run For Cover Records!

This has been a ridiculously good year.  So many great albums.  I'm even considering making separate genre end of the year lists, since it's going to be very difficult to come up with a solid top 20 list.  But, we'll see.  In the meantime, I thought I'd throw out some recommendations for music you should listen to this week.

The heavy rock/metal-core/metal scene has been kicking it this year.  I can't recommend the following two albums more.  I've been basically listening to these nonstop since they were released last week:
O'Brother - Disillusion
Native - Orthodox

Another fun album:
The Ongoing Concept - Saloon

A really nice DJ mix:
Jody Wisternoff & James Grant - Anjunadeep 05

Run For Cover Records have had some really solid albums released this year.  They are definitely up for label of the year.  You should definitely check out:
Citizen - Youth
Young Statues - Age Isn't Ours EP
Captain, We're Sinking - The Future Is Cancelled
Turnover - Magnolia
Pity Sex - Feast of Love
Daylight - Jar
Cloakroom - Infinity

What are your recommendations?  Go make your ears happy!

A Year of Great Electronica & Trip-hop

So far, this has been a really solid year for electronica and trip-hop.  So many great albums have already been released while others are soon to come!  Below I list some of my own highlights for the year.  Do you have any additions?

Bonobo - The North Borders

This album is probably my top album for the year at the moment.  Some really slick trip-hop awesomeness here.  So chill and catchy.  I cannot get enough of the song, "Towers".  But really, every song is so good.  Bonobo really is a master of his art.  You can stream a lot of his tracks on Soundcloud.

Emancipator - Dusk To Dawn

Dusk to Dawn is a solid, organic trip-hop album.  I love listening to it, while working and reading.  It just makes you want to sway!

Sasha - Involv3r

Sasha is a master of DJ sets.  I love all of his singles and Involver albums.  I could listen to his sets on Soundcloud all day if it weren't for all of the other music I need to listen to.  Involv3r is really chill, but there are some really great cuts.  I especially like his version of James Zabiela's "The Healing".

Nick Warren - Renaissance, The Masters Series, Pt. 18

Nick Warren (one of the members of the great group, Way Out West) is another DJ master.  He's always sharing new DJ sets either on Soundcloud or his website.  You should definitely check them out.  Unfortunately his Renaissance mix is not available in the US yet.  But, you can find some tracks around.  This DJ set sees him taking it down a notch with some really ambient house music.

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (coming May 21)

What can I say about Daft Punk that you don't already know?  They are great.  And, this new album is absolutely fantastic, full of funky grooves -- as if they're reaching back in time to the disco age.  But, you can also hear some influences from their experience composing the Tron Legacy soundtrack.  The album is streaming in full on iTunes.  If you haven't checked it out yet, you need to get on that!

Tricky - False Idols (coming May 28)

I love tricky.  He's one of those artists whose always made the music he loves, and he's pushed trip-hop to new places.  Of the tracks I've heard so far, False Idols is shaping up to be another masterpiece!

August Burns Red Release New Song "Fault Line"

August burns red have released a new song, "Fault Line", from their upcoming album Rescue & Restore, which drops on June 25th.  Song is really, really good.  Definitely looking forward to the rest of the album!  Check it out below!

Review: Funeral For A Friend - Conduit

The Welsh post-hardcore rockers, Funeral for a Friend, have had an interesting career.  In 2003, the band immediately became popular with Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation.  More often than not, every one of their subsequent albums have been compared to this titular work.  Perhaps a disappointing trend to the majority (this reviewer excluded), FFAF slowly steered away from this heavy atmosphere and screams, and steadily took a more "conventional rock" approach with Hours, Tales Don't Tell Themselves, and Memory and Humanity.  To be honest, I enjoyed all of these albums, especially the concept in TDTT.  I can appreciate the decision to experiment with different sounds to grow as a band.

In 2011, after a bit of line-up change (something the band has dealt with through the years), FFAF re-established itself as a hard-hitting powerhouse with Welcome Home Armageddon.  One could possibly call it a "return to form".   I would say that it was just a warm-up for Conduit, one of the band's heaviest and finest work since Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation.  Dare I say, the finest?  I think so.

Conduit is the ultimate blend of all past albums. It's full of energy and slaying riffs infused with catchy choruses, most noticeable in songs like the first single from the album, "Best Friends and Hospital Beds", as well as "Nails".  Some have claimed this renewed energy was sparked by the arrival of the band's newest member, drummer Pat Lundy.  Perhaps, but it also feels like the rest of the band literally broke all their shackles holding them down and needed somewhere to release all that pent up energy.  Matt Davies' vocals sound amazing throughout the album, rough and full of aggressive urgency.  But, it's the melodies subtly interwoven in the aggression that really bring Conduit together.

It's hard to choose a favorite amongst the songs on Conduit.  I did find myself really enjoying "Elements", which bassist Richard Boucher described as the hardest song to write on Conduit (see article on Alt Press).  Well gents, you definitely nailed it!  Note also that most songs don't reach beyond the three minute mark, which keeps each song from getting stale.  If anything, I just wanted more.

Anyway, if you haven't listened to Conduit yet, you better get on that.  It's one of the best, if not, the best album FFAF has written, to date.  I've had the album on repeat all day and I'm looking forward to adding this album to my sprint-interval running playlist.

Best of 2012

Well, I'm a bit late as usual, but I've finally come up with my end of the year lists.  Honestly, this year was really difficult.  I had a real hard time putting an order to all of the albums.  For example, From Indian Lakes dropped their album late in the year, but it totally blew me away.  Had that album on repeat all the time.  I suppose I tried to order the albums according to how much I listened to each one.  In any case, all albums in this list are fantastic!  So, without further adieu...

Top 30 Albums of the 2012:

1) From Indian Lakes - Able Bodies
2) Anberlin - Vital
3) Coasta - Sunzal EP
4) Caspian - Waking Season
5) Circa Survive - Violent Waves
6) Hans Zimmer - The Dark Knight Rises
7) Yellowcard - Southern Air
8) Breton - Other People's Problems

17) Prawn - Ships EP
18) P.O.S. - We Don't Even Live Here
19) Now, Now - Threads
20) Troubled Coast - I've Been Thinking About Leaving You EP
21) The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
22) The Menzingers - On the Impossible Past

28) NGHBRS - Hellomind EP
29) The Swellers - Running Out Of Places To Go EP
30) Collapse Under the Empire - Fragments of a Prayer

Special Mention:

A couple albums came out this year that would definitely fit into my top 20, but I feel they don't quite fit the category.  One is a remix album of one of the best trip-hop artists, while the other is a Christmas album from a solid metal band.  You should definitely check both out!

Bonobo - Black Sands Remixed
August Burns Red - Sleddin' Hill, A Holiday Album

Best Songs (in alphabetical order):

Always Summer - Yellowcard
Continuous Thunder - Japandroids
